YES! Men Can Do Skin to Skin, too

Posted on January 18, 2024January 18, 2024 By Kirsten Fisch

Parenthood is an incredible journey filled with heartwarming moments, and one magical experience that deserves the spotlight is the delightful practice of skin-to-skin contact between fathers and their babies. Forget the traditional stereotypes – it’s time to celebrate the dads who are ready to dive into the world of diapers, late-night feedings, and, of course, the warm and fuzzy embrace of skin-to-skin cuddles. It can feel a bit awkward at first, and as a mother baby nurse, I often see partners who are a little hesitant, but once they try it… baby and dad usually cannot be separated. We’re here to share the love and shed light on the incredible benefits of dads engaging in this sweet bonding ritual with their newborns. So, grab a cup of coffee (or perhaps a baby bottle), get comfortable, and let’s explore the heartwarming connection that awaits you and your baby!

Benefits of Dad’s Skin-to-Skin Contact:

  1. Enhanced Bonding: Skin-to-skin contact promotes the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone.” This bonding hormone helps strengthen the emotional connection between a father and his baby, fostering a sense of security and trust.
  2. Regulation of Baby’s Body Temperature: A newborn’s ability to regulate body temperature is not fully developed. Dad’s warm skin provides a comforting environment, helping the baby maintain a stable body temperature.
  3. Improved Sleep Quality: Skin-to-skin contact has been shown to improve the quality of a baby’s sleep. The soothing presence of the father can help regulate the baby’s sleep patterns, leading to more restful nights for both parent and child.
  4. Stress Reduction for Both Parties: The calming effect of skin-to-skin contact is not limited to the baby. Fathers also experience reduced stress levels, creating a positive feedback loop that benefits the overall well-being of the family.
  5. Promotes Breastfeeding: For families choosing to breastfeed, skin-to-skin contact with the father can encourage successful breastfeeding. The close proximity facilitates the baby’s instinctual rooting and latching behaviors.

How to Engage in Skin-to-Skin Contact:

  1. Find a Comfortable Environment: Choose a warm and quiet space where you and your baby can relax without distractions. Ensure the room temperature is suitable for the baby.
  2. Undress Both Yourself and the Baby: To maximize skin-to-skin contact, remove your shirt and gently undress your baby, leaving only a diaper. This allows for direct skin contact, promoting the benefits mentioned earlier.
  3. Support the Baby’s Head and Neck: When holding your baby, always support their head and neck with your hands. This is crucial, especially in the early weeks when a baby’s neck muscles are still developing.
  4. Enjoy Uninterrupted Time Together: Skin-to-skin contact is most effective when done without interruptions. Use this time to talk, sing, or simply enjoy the quiet moments with your newborn.

Engaging in skin-to-skin contact with your baby is a powerful way to strengthen the bond between father and child, providing a multitude of physical and emotional benefits. As societal norms continue to evolve, embracing practices like these highlights the importance of shared parenting responsibilities and celebrates the unique connection each parent can have with their little one.
