Building a Strong Relationship with Your Healthcare Provider During Pregnancy

Posted on February 10, 2025February 10, 2025 By Carole Falletta

Pregnancy comes with so many emotions—excitement, anticipation, and sometimes a little anxiety. One of the best ways to feel confident and informed throughout your journey is to have open, honest, and comfortable communication with your healthcare provider. Whether you’re seeing an OB-GYN, midwife, or another prenatal care specialist, feeling heard and supported makes all the difference.

So how can you build that strong relationship and make sure your concerns are addressed? Here are some simple ways to develop good communication with your provider.

Be Open and Honest About Your Concerns

Your provider is there to support you, not judge you. Whether you’re worried about symptoms, mental health, or even just something you read online, don’t be afraid to bring it up. The more open you are, the better they can guide you with accurate information and reassurance.

If something feels “off” to you, trust your instincts and speak up. You know your body better than anyone, and your concerns deserve to be taken seriously.

Prepare for Your Appointments

Pregnancy visits can sometimes feel rushed, and it’s easy to forget questions in the moment. Before your appointment, jot down any symptoms, concerns, or questions you want to ask. Even keeping a small note in your phone can help ensure you don’t leave with lingering doubts.

Some good questions to ask might be:

  • Is this symptom normal?
  • What should I expect in the next few weeks?
  • Are there any tests or screenings coming up?
  • What are my options for pain management during labor?

Ask Questions (Even If You Think They’re Silly!)

There’s no such thing as a “dumb” question when it comes to pregnancy. If you don’t understand something your provider says, ask them to explain it in simpler terms. You should leave every appointment feeling informed and comfortable with your care plan.

If you ever feel like your concerns are being dismissed, don’t hesitate to push for more information or ask for clarification. Your health and your baby’s well-being are worth it.

Take Notes or Bring a Support Person

Medical jargon can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when discussing test results or important decisions. Taking notes during your appointment can help you remember key details. If you prefer, bring your partner, a friend, or a family member to help listen and ask questions.

Understand That Communication Is a Two-Way Street

A good provider won’t just talk at you—they’ll listen to you. If you ever feel rushed, unheard, or uncomfortable, let them know. You deserve to feel respected in your care.

If you find that your concerns aren’t being taken seriously despite your efforts to communicate, it may be time to consider switching providers. You should always feel like you’re in a partnership when it comes to your pregnancy care.

Advocate for Yourself

If something isn’t sitting right with you—whether it’s a medical recommendation or how you’re being treated—speak up. You have every right to ask for a second opinion or request further explanation. Your voice matters.

Build Trust and a Connection

The more you and your provider understand each other, the more comfortable you’ll feel throughout your pregnancy. Open dialogue, mutual respect, and a little bit of patience go a long way in making your prenatal experience as smooth and positive as possible.

Final Thoughts

Good communication with your healthcare provider isn’t just about getting answers—it’s about feeling heard, valued, and supported. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, express your concerns, and advocate for yourself. This is your pregnancy, and you deserve a provider who listens and guides you with care.

Remember, you’re not just a patient—you’re a mom-to-be, and your voice is important.
