Keeping Your Pregnancy Under Wraps During the Holidays: Tips for Staying Private

Posted on December 23, 2024January 20, 2025 By Carole Falletta

The holidays are a time for joy, celebration, and family gatherings—but if you’re newly pregnant and not quite ready to share the news, navigating the festivities can feel a little tricky. Between the endless toasts and the suspicious looks when you pass on certain holiday favorites, you might be wondering how to keep your secret safe.

If you’re not ready to disclose your pregnancy yet, don’t worry! Here are some friendly, creative, and subtle ways to keep your news under wraps during the holiday season.

Master the Art of the “Mocktail”

Holiday parties often come with a glass of wine, champagne, or festive cocktails. If you’re passing on alcohol, this can be one of the first things people notice. Instead of drawing attention, bring your own festive “mocktail” or quietly ask the host for a soda water with lime, cranberry juice, or a sparkling cider. Most people won’t think twice if you have a drink in your hand that looks the part!

Tip: If someone offers you a drink, just say you’re already covered.

Use the “Not Feeling Well” Card

The holiday season can be exhausting, even without pregnancy symptoms like nausea or fatigue. If someone notices you’re skipping wine or certain foods, you can simply say, “I’m not feeling 100% today, so I’m taking it easy.” Most people will assume you’re fighting off a seasonal bug or just overindulged on holiday treats the night before.

Blame the Designated Driver Role

If you’re at an event where drinks are flowing, offer to be the designated driver. It’s a great excuse to skip alcohol without raising eyebrows. Plus, your friends and family will appreciate having someone responsible to get them home safely!

Strategically Navigate Food Choices

Certain holiday foods, like sushi, soft cheeses, or undercooked meats, might be off-limits for you right now. If someone notices you’re skipping these, just say you’re trying to make “healthier choices” or “saving room for dessert.” No one needs to know the real reason behind your choices unless you’re ready to share.

Deflect the Attention

If someone directly asks you, “Are you pregnant?” (because nosy relatives do exist!), a little humor can go a long way. Try saying, “Why? Are you offering to babysit?” or “Nope, just enjoying all the cookies!” Playful responses can lighten the moment and shift the conversation without giving anything away.

Dress for Discretion

If you’re starting to show and worried about people noticing, go for holiday outfits that are stylish but forgiving. Loose-fitting sweaters, flowy tops, or dresses with empire waists can keep your secret safe while still letting you feel festive and comfortable.

Keep Your Partner in the Loop

If your partner will be with you during holiday gatherings, make sure you’re on the same page about keeping the news private. Discuss how you’ll handle questions or situations so you’re both ready to support each other if the topic comes up.

Have a Go-To Distraction

Sometimes, the best way to avoid questions is to keep others busy talking about something else. Compliment someone’s outfit, ask about their holiday plans, or dive into a group conversation about favorite traditions or funny holiday memories. Shifting the focus can take the heat off you.

Know It’s Okay to Say “Not Yet”

If someone directly asks you about having kids or expanding your family, it’s perfectly fine to respond with, “Not yet!” or “We’ll see what the future holds.” Most people will take that as a cue to move on.

Have Fun and Enjoy the Moment

It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about keeping your pregnancy a secret, but don’t forget to enjoy the holiday season. These gatherings are about connection, love, and creating memories. Focus on the joy of being with loved ones, and let the rest take care of itself.

Your Secret is Safe

Whether you’re waiting to share the news until after the first trimester or just want to keep it private a little longer, it’s your choice, and you shouldn’t feel pressured to share before you’re ready. With a little preparation and creativity, you can enjoy the holiday festivities without giving away your special secret.

When the time is right, your loved ones will be thrilled to hear your news—but for now, you’ve got this under wraps.
