Supporting New Moms: Tips for Families from a Mother-Baby Nurse

Posted on April 24, 2024April 24, 2024 By Carole Falletta

Hello there, wonderful families and friends! As a mother-baby nurse and lactation specialist, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the incredible journey of childbirth time and time again. While new mothers are at the center of this experience, families/friends play an essential role in supporting them through this transformative time. Today, I want to share some tips on how you can be a rock-solid support system for the new moms in their lives:

  1. Offer Practical Help: New moms have a lot on their plates, from diaper changes to feedings and everything in between. Offer to lend a hand with household chores, cooking meals, or running errands so that mom can focus on bonding with her little one and recovering from childbirth.
  2. Listen with an Open Heart: Sometimes, all a new mom needs is a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. Take the time to listen to her concerns, fears, and joys without judgment. Let her know that her feelings are valid and that you’re there to support her every step of the way.
  3. Encourage Self-Care: It’s easy for new moms to put their own needs on the back burner as they prioritize caring for their babies. Encourage mom to prioritize self-care by taking breaks, getting enough rest, and engaging in activities that bring her joy and relaxation.
  4. Promote Bonding Time: Bonding with a new baby is a precious and irreplaceable experience. Encourage others to give mom and baby space to bond without feeling rushed or pressured. Offer to take care of other tasks so that mom can focus on cuddling, feeding, and soothing her little one.
  5. Respect Her Choices: Every new mom has her own unique parenting style and preferences. Respect her choices, whether it’s regarding feeding methods, sleeping arrangements, or childcare decisions. Offer support and encouragement without imposing your own opinions or judgments.
  6. Educate Yourself: Take the time to educate yourself about childbirth, newborn care, and postpartum recovery. Understanding what mom is going through will not only help you provide better support but also strengthen your bond as a family/caregiver.
  7. Celebrate Her Strength: Childbirth is no easy feat, and new moms deserve all the praise and celebration in the world. Take the time to acknowledge and celebrate her strength, resilience, and the incredible journey she’s embarked on.
  8. Be Patient and Understanding: Adjusting to life with a new baby can be challenging, and emotions may run high. Be patient and understanding with mom as she navigates this new chapter of her life. Offer reassurance, love, and a listening ear whenever she needs it.

Remember, the support of family and friends is invaluable to a new mom as she embarks on this beautiful journey of motherhood. By offering practical help, emotional support, and unwavering love, you can help make this transformative time as smooth and joyous as possible.
